17 students advanced from the district-level UIL Academics contest to compete at the regional-level contest on Saturday at Magnolia High School. This meet determines which students will compete at the state-level meet at UT Austin on May 3-5.

“I love what we do–it’s fun,” UIL coordinator Richard Baty said. “Science and journalism have a good chance of advancing. I expect that several students will advance to state.”

Those who advanced are: Kate McLeod, Dana Ramirez, Courtney Eeds, Nic McIntyre, Chris Knight, Morgan Gage, Daniel Cleckler, Haris Khan, BJ Teves, Cyrus Mahdavi, Wade Liscott, Michael Le, Caleb Cox , River Tomlinson, Vincent Hilario, Tasnia Bari, and Hannah McGinnis.

“Well, I think my chances are about fifty-fifty this year,” senior Cyrus Mahdavi said. “I’m glad to be going to regionals again, especially with my team this time. We’re really just keeping our fingers crossed, getting prepared, studying, and hopefully going to state.”

Students will be participating in a variety of events such as: Journalism, Literary Criticism, Ready Writing, Current Events, Calculator Applications, Social Studies, Accounting, Computer Science, and Science.

“[Going to regionals] is exciting because it’s my first year going, but it’s also nerve-wracking because it’s my senior year, so it’s my last chance to try and go to state,” senior Courtney Eeds said. “I think, if I just keep putting in the practice that I have been putting in, I’ll have a pretty good chance.”

The Science, Math, Literary Criticism, and Computer Science teams all took 1st place team at the district level. Students are looking to advance both individually and with a team.

“I think we have a pretty decent chance as a team,” senior River Tomlinson said. “We have some pretty talented people on our team. I did alright last year, but I think this year I can prove my abilities, get far, and just challenged myself.”
